Okay, I applied a cumulative patch all the way to 1.0.3.0. Nothing doing...something in one of the updates on the home page did something else...

I applied the 1.0.2.9 --> 1.0.3.0 --> 1.0.31 --> 1.0.31 (2nd one) and then I tried out TF2 and it crashed before reaching the menu.

Crashed with ... ?

It just says hl2.exe encountered an error and had to close. (send error report)

Can you reinstall game or DL GCF-files?

I am doing that right now, but I was hoping there was an easier way to fix it because I have a slow connection and it will take a while to redownload the game.

By the way, how did you guys manage to shrink the size of TF2 down to 919 MB?

You can DL GCF-files and make standalone.

Is there any reason why you'd want to do that instead?

How do I open up the .bin files and install TF2?

I searched the download thread for instructions but could not find any

You've to have:
<name>.exe (Installer)
<name>-1.bin (Data)
<name>-2.bin (Data)
etc.
